Opportunities for young people

We’re helping more young people get educated, trained and into good jobs through our Global Youth Initiative. This doesn’t just help them, it lays the foundations for a prosperous future for all of us.

Our commitment

Roll out our Nestlé needs YOUth initiative across all our operations

Why it matters

Youth unemployment affects millions around the world, contributing to global poverty. As a major employer, we know the positive difference we can make through employment opportunities and skills development. We offer apprenticeships, training schemes and initiatives designed to equip people with essential workplace skills.

Our approach

Through apprenticeships and training schemes, our Nestlé needs YOUth initiative puts opportunity in the hands of young people around the world. In 2018, we expanded our efforts by launching the Global Youth Initiative to help 10 million young people across our value chain – from operations and supply, to agriculture and innovation – gain access to economic opportunities over the next ten years.

What we are doing

We’ve come a long way since launching Nestlé needs YOUth in 2013.

By 2020

Nestlé needs YOUth Initiative commits to deliver:

  • 45?000 to 50?000 apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities.
  • Continued readiness-for-work events globally, with an increasing number of employees involved in such events.
  • Enhanced collaboration with external partners to motivate them to join and to increase impact.
  • 20?000 to 25?000 job opportunities for people under 30 years of age every year.

Our result: Over 26 000 job opportunities offered to people under the age of 30.

Our result: 4900 readiness-for-work events organized to help prepare young people for work, with 9800 employees volunteering for such events.

Our result: Nestlé needs YOUth continued to grow, reaching more than 300 partners.

We’ve put opportunity in the hands of 150?000 European young people

We’re proud that between 2016 and 2018, we and our partner companies met our pledge of offering 150?000 young people in Europe jobs, apprenticeships or traineeships. We also announced a new partnership with JA Europe to support 500 secondary school and vocational students to achieve the Entrepreneurial Skills Pass.

We kicked off the Alliance for YOUth in 2014 to help make a positive difference to the lives of young people around the world, in a time when around 70 million youths worldwide are unemployed and half a billion are under-employed or stuck in precarious jobs. Built on collaboration, the Alliance brings together governments, foundations, youth organizations, academia and the private sector.

I am very happy to see that we have altogether delivered on our pledge to offer jobs and training opportunities to about 150?000 young people in the last two years. We will continue to step up efforts to strengthen business–education collaboration and invest in young people’s future. Marco Settembri, Nestlé CEO, Zone EMENA

Access to finance will make the difference for hundreds of young entrepreneurs

In 2018, we launched the Social Investment Accelerator program to help young social entrepreneurs gain access to finance. Created in partnership with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and designed and led by , the program aims to create growth and opportunity for young people worldwide.

The accelerator kicked off in Johannesburg in September 2018, and is providing mentorship to 12 social entrepreneurs in Africa who are working in fields including food, water and youth employment. There are 36 mentors involved in the program, and 20 of them are from Nestlé’s African business, including CFOs and regional managers.

The program aims to support young people in finding the right types of financing for their business, and the entrepreneurs will be invited to pitch their business ideas to a cohort of investors in March 2019.

Celebrating Africa Youth Day with the launch of the Alliance for YOUth in Morocco

Our Alliance for YOUth has helped thousands of young people in Europe and Latin America get jobs, apprenticeships and traineeships since 2014. On Africa Youth Day 2018, we were proud to extend the program to young people in Africa.

For a decade, we’ve been helping to train and educate young people, farmers and women in various African countries. But we want to do more. Because the Alliance for YOUth is built on collaboration, it enables us to go further by bringing in partners, including governments, NGOs, youth organizations, universities and other businesses.

At our launch on November 1, we were joined by Hikma, HPS, Intelcia, L’Oréal, Nielsen and Sodexo. Together, we aim to provide young people not just with jobs and apprenticeships, but with the skills that will help them set up their own companies.

Supporting young entrepreneurs in Africa

In 2018, we partnered with 22 ON SLOANE, the largest start-up campus in Africa, which offers support to start-ups and SMEs. As well as hosting masterclasses for the campus to help young entrepreneurs crystallize their ideas into prototypes, we led a ‘start-up huddle’, connecting entrepreneurs to a network of investors and mentors. Activities supported by Nestlé, including work-readiness events, careers fairs and life-skills programs, reached more than 12?000 young people in 2018.

We’re helping 30?000 Pacific Alliance young people get work

In 2018, the Alliance for YOUth in The Pacific Alliance countries increased its commitment to contribute to young people’s employability in?Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru. The Alliance pledged to create 30?000?professional development?opportunities by 2020, a?significant increase from the original 17 000 target in 2017. Youth unemployment among 15–24-year-olds in Latin America and the Caribbean is 18%.?The Alliance for YOUth in the Pacific Alliance countries?was developed in partnership with 36 other companies, the International Youth Organization for Ibero-America (OIJ) and the governments of the Pacific Alliance countries.

Our engagement with the young generation is a long-term commitment, aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 8, specifically target 6, to substantially reduce the proportion of youth not in employment, education or training. At Nestlé, our ambition is to create opportunities for youth across our value chain through direct job opportunities, apprenticeships and internships, and through supporting young entrepreneurs as well as agripreneurs.

The increased commitment was announced at the third Pacific Alliance Youth Summit in Cali, Colombia.

Our CEO for Zone Americas was appointed International Youth Ambassador

Laurent Freixe, Nestlé’s CEO for Zone Americas, was appointed International Youth Ambassador by the OIJ. An honorary title, it was awarded for his leadership in launching the Nestlé needs YOUth and Alliance for YOUth initiatives.

The leaders of tomorrow need our guidance, our support, and above all they need opportunities and platforms where their voice can be heard, and their ideas can be realized. I firmly believe that we must do everything in our power to help them. Laurent Freixe, Nestlé CEO, Zone Americas
